Whether we like it or not, trials and tribulations are part of our life’s journey and one of the biggest challenges we face. Everybody goes through times of testing, so we simply have to be ready for it.

Learning to deal with and overcome adversity is what defines the essence of who we are. When we rise above our greatest challenges, qualities such as confidence, courage, determination and character emerge from deep within us. We develop in ways that would not otherwise be possible.

We share some tips for overcoming adversity.

“There is nothing better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance next time.” – Malcolm X

Acceptance: Adversity is an unavoidable part of life. Death of a loved one, breakup of a relationship, malicious action by another, job loss, natural disaster or any other undesirable event is encountered by all of us on a different level. Feelings of denial, depression, regret, despair, giving up, anger and unforgiveness are not uncommon. These reactions encumber your recovery. Acceptance is the first step to realising that what has happened has happened and you cannot change it. What you can change, is the way you react to it and how you grow on a deeper level.

Life lessons: Every event presents you with life lessons to be learnt, which are specific to you. There are no mistakes, only lessons. And lessons are repeated until learned. It is your choice to use these opportunities to develop your wisdom. This wisdom will lead you on your journey to self-discovery and enlightenment. As you learn your life lessons you will discover the true meaning of compassion, forgiveness, understanding and unconditional love, which will further develop your authentic self.

”Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” –Helen Keller

See the bigger picture: It is easy to over think and get over emotional or wrapped up in the perpetual cycle of negativity. STOP and bring your awareness to the greater picture and the knowledge of the divine plan. Some events are blessings in disguise. Assess the situation to see the positives and you will view the events in a total different light. When you open yourself up to possible options, you are in a place of power to exercise better choices, which lead to awesome results.

Courage and faith: A courageous person believes in the power within them and is willing to be vulnerable to life’s unpredictable changes. Courage equips us with the trust we need to follow our hearts no matter which outside influences seem to block our way. Faith is a belief in the unseen power that everything will be okay. When you have faith in yourself and a higher source, you live in the belief that you are loved and never alone.

“Tough times never last, but strong people do.” – Robert H. Schuller

Live in the present moment: Nothing you can do, say, feel or think will ever change the past. It’s pointless to be remorseful about the past and fearful about the future. Focus your time and energy – your two most valuable resources – on making the most of the present, so that you can grow your hopes, beliefs and values into a bigger and brighter future.

“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” – Michael Jordan

Answers lie within you: Deep down you know the truth of the situation and being honest with yourself and others not only allows you the freedom of a clear conscience, but also doing what is right for you. So trust your innermost feelings. At times your intuition can provide you with solutions to your problems. Draw on your natural insight.

Invest in yourself: There is no greater investment than the investment you make in personal development. Facing adversity is a perfect opportunity to explore different experiences, learn new skills, read self-help books, listen to motivational audio CD’s or attend empowering workshops, to develop yourself on all levels – mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

“The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy and unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer.” – M. Scott Peck

Remember that whatever it is, or how difficult it may be, say to yourself, “THIS, TOO, SHALL PASS.” And you will triumph over adversity and rise above the challenges of life.

Live your authentic life!
