BUILDING SELF-CONFIDENCE

Self confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, yet so many of us struggle to find it. This often leads to self-destructive behaviour and thus limits people to reach their true potential and live full lives.

The good news is that self confidence is a skill which can be learned and developed over time. We share a few secrets to build your self confidence so that you can live your life with passion and purpose.

“Don’t wait until everything is just right, it will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger, and more skilled, and more self-confident and more and more successful.” – Mark Victor Hansen

Do a SWOT exercise: You are most likely to succeed in life if you use your strengths and grab opportunities. By identifying your Strengths and Weaknesses, you become more self-aware, and by analysing your Opportunities and Treats that flow from them, you’ll be better able to managed life’s challenges. What makes SWOT especially powerful is that, with a simple list, it can help you uncover opportunities that you would not otherwise have identified. And by understanding your weaknesses, you can managed or eliminate threats that might otherwise hurt your ability to move forward. What’s most important to me is to take cognisance of your strengths, work on them to make them stronger so that you can use them more often.

Learn from your mistakes: Bounce back from your mistakes. Use every incident as a life lesson and grow from them. We all have insecurities and feel that we lack something. That is reality. Learn that life is full of bumps and often our insecurities come and go depending on where we are on our journey. This is not a permanent situation. You have it within you to rise above your challenges and overcome them. Never regret anything that has happened in your life, it cannot be changed, undone or forgotten so take it as a lesson learned and move on.

Identify your successes: Too often we don’t give ourselves the credit that we deserve. We are always looking for acknowledgement, appreciation and approval from outside sources. You, yourself must be your number one fan. Praise yourself for all that you achieved and reward yourself for tasks that you do well.

“I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence but it comes from within. It is there all the time.” – Anna Freud

Build your knowledge: Applied knowledge is power. We are fortunate in a highly advanced technology era to literally obtain information at our finger tips. Obtaining as much information about a particular subject will increase your knowledge base. Being well prepared and with practice you will automatically feel more confident about that topic.

Manage your mind: You are a product of your thoughts. Manage your thought process and the flow of negative self-talk. Think and speak positively about yourself, about your future and about your progress. Do not be afraid to project your strengths and qualities to others. By doing so, you reinforce those ideas in your mind and encourage your growth in a positive direction.

Let go of your fears: We all have deep rooted fears that hold us back in achieving all we want in life. Most of our fears are based on bad experiences, our insecurities and our limiting beliefs. Realise that with every opportunity, you have a chance to start on a new page. By letting go of these fears, and by being willing to take some risks, you open yourself to endless possibilities for fulfilling and positive results.

“Don’t let others define you. Don’t let the past confine you. Take charge of your life with confidence and determination and there are no limits on what you can do or be.” – Michael Josephson

Accept compliments: Don’t roll your eyes and say, “Yeah, right” or shrug it off. We find it so hard to accept compliments graciously. Take it to heart and respond positively. A simple “thank you” and a smile work well.

Fake it until you make it: Ever heard of this expression? It really works. By thinking and acting confident, you will believe in yourself and this leads to great results. Over a period of time, your behavior will naturally align itself to your thinking and acting.

Stick to your principles: Always do what you believe to be right, even if others mock or criticise you for it. It might be tough, but if you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything. Be proud to stand by your principles and you will always live your life with dignity and integrity. Standing up for your right to be who you are, no matter what, is empowering. This is also integral to building up your self confidence.

“To me, beauty represents many things: it means being comfortable in my own skin, freedom of expression and not feeling the need to change myself. A confident woman is a beautiful one” – Nkulee Dube
